After October 10 2017, Windows 10 PC's and Laptops running version 1511 will no longer receive security and quality updates. Microsoft therefore recommends that you update to the latest version of Windows 10.
Version 1511 was released in November 2015 and Microsoft has released regular updates. The second feature update, version 1607 (the Anniversary Update) was released in summer 2016 and version 1703 (the Creators Update) was released in April 2017. Microsoft supports each feature update for 18 months.
Which version of Windows 10 are you using?
To find out whch version of Windows 10 you are currently running, type WINVER Into the search box on the taskbar and press Enter. This will open the About Windows dialog box, which will show you the version of Windows 10 that's running on your computer.
If your version is listed as 1511 (or an earlier version) you should upgrade to the latest version of Windows 10 before October 10th.
The end of service impacts Windows 10 Home, Professional, Education and Enterprise versions.
What if I don't upgrade?
If you carry on using version 1511, or an earlier version, your computer will continue to work as normal. BUT you will no longer receive new security updates or other quality updates. This means that your computer will be more vulnerable to security risks - hackers, malware, viruses etc.
CNC strongly recommends that you update to the latest version of Windows 10, as described above, and that you keep up-to-date thereafter. Microsoft provides free support to ensure your device has the latest updates installed. But it will only help with other technical support issues if your computer software is up-to-date.
If you are a CNC customer we will contact you if you require this update, and schedule a convenient time with you to carry it out.
We can help you improve the overall security of your IT System and help you achieve the Cyber Essentials certification.
