What is your earliest recollection of IT in your life?

I was about 13 years old, and I remember arguing with my dad about whether I could stay up all night to play computer games on a PC that he had brought home.

When did you decide that you wanted a career in IT?

Having an older computer at home, it would often break down, as they did in those days. Having no one to go to for help, and not having the money to fix it, I just started trying to fix it myself. I found that I enjoyed diagnosing the problems and, my love for IT just grew from there.

I find it extremely rewarding when people ask me complex questions born out of complex problems”

What would you have been if you hadn’t gone into IT?

It’s changed over the years as my hobbies have changed. But since I like anything mechanical, probably a mechanic, but not a standard mechanic. I would likely be working with real heavy-duty stuff, like big industrial machinery or plant equipment.

What do you like most about your day working with clients in IT?

I find it extremely rewarding when people ask me complex questions born out of complex problems. These questions normally stem from IT issues that have a major impact on their business. Being able to come up with a solution to these problems using my expertise and experience is very satisfying, especially as I can often see the results of what was recommended.

What’s been a key highlight in your life with IT?

Many years ago, I worked in the IT department for a special needs school and there was a lot of accessibility software that needed installing. Unfortunately, this type of software isn’t very easy to install or use. But the children relied on it to access their education.

It was a privilege to work with these children and the software that gave them some form of normality in their school lives. It was tremendously satisfying to get speech software working for a group of children who’d never been able to communicate with each other before. They were suddenly able to tell everyone all of their thoughts and feelings clearly and quickly, even to people outside their circle of care.

Often, these individuals would have been suffering from an acute illness or birth condition, and their prognosis was for a short lifetime. So, for me to have helped them communicate properly for the first time in all their adult life or early adult life stands out to me as something very special I’ve done.
