Why is there a global shortage of microchips?

Microchips are an essential component of every electronic product, from your TV remote control to desktop and laptop computers. During the Covid-19 pandemic demand for electronic equipment items skyrocketed! Confined to our homes we needed entertainment and the means to connect with other people online. As a result, demand for laptops, ipads, smartphones and video game consoles increased significantly.

This put enormous pressure on the supply chain when the microchip factories were able to reopen. Recently demand for new cars, which contain numerous microchips, has bounced back. Not surprisingly, the combination of these factors has sent microchip buyers into a panic. And we all know what happened with panic buying of toilet rolls! Panic buying in itself creates shortages.

The global shortage of microchips is now affecting the supply of most computer products, including network switches, routers, laptops, wireless access points and smartphones. And this in turn is leading to an increase in prices.

Some of the largest tech companies including Apple, Sony and Samsung have increased lead times for their products and delayed the launch of new ones.

The car industry has been hit hard, with customers having to wait six months or more for new car orders.

The big microchip producers are looking to expand their facilities to meet the growing demand, but it will take at least a year before this expansion delivers the additional microchips required. Experts in the industry are predicting it could take up to two years before the supply of microchips is sufficient to meet demand.

CNC advice to customers is to start planning well in advance for any new IT equipment purchases. Lead times for most products are now months rather than weeks unfortunately.

If you would like to discuss any aspect of the microchip shortage and its impact on IT equipment purchasing, then please do get in touch on 01273 384100 or email us at sales@cnc-ltd.co.uk

IT Security: What does your business need?

Ransomware attacks have been in the news a lot recently. Businesses of all sizes have been victims of these attacks and the need to focus on IT Security has never been greater.

Unfortunately, there is no one simple solution.

To fully protect all aspects of your IT systems, a range of products and services is required. Just as there is no one way to protect your home from intruders. You may have:

  • Locks on windows and doors
  • An alarm system
  • CCTV
  • And (if you live in a mansion!) perimeter fences, locked gates, even a security guard

This is then all covered with some form of insurance policy.

You can see the value of having a range of security products and services to protect your business from attack.

This is a “shopping list” of product and services you can put in place now to provide maximum protection for your network and users:

  • Anti-Virus software on all Servers and Workstations
  • Patching for Servers and Workstations (regular software ‘patches’ or updates)
  • Mail Security - from Mimecast or Office 365 with Defender
  • Two Factor Authentication (2FA). This prevents unauthorised user access by sending an access code to their smartphone or email address
  • Firewall to protect your network
  • Penetration testing to check your network is secure from outside
  • Internal vulnerability testing to check your network is secure from inside your business
  • Phishing system to pick up phishing emails
  • Security Awareness Training to keep staff awareness high
  • Monitoring of the Deep and Dark Web to check if your IT systems have been compromised
  • Network Inventory
  • Cyber Essentials certification

At CNC IT security is our number one priority and we make use of all these products and services to protect our own network and computer systems.

We are also accredited with the ISO 27001 which is the British Standard for cyber security and information security.
