The Three Parts of the World Wide Web

We are all familiar with the World Wide Web. That’s what www stands for! Also known as the internet of course. But not many of us know that it is broken down into three parts - the Surface Web, the Deep Web and the Dark Web. You’ve probably heard of the third one. In a very negative way!

So, what are these three parts?

1. The Surface Web

The Surface Web is where you and I spend most of our time. Browsing the internet through websites and social media. Internet search engines like Google and Bing search this ‘Surface Web’ to direct you to relevant websites.

2. The Deep Web

The Deep Web is a much larger part of the internet and it is hidden from the outside world. It comprises sites which require a username and password to access them. The Deep Web is not indexed by the search engines, so these websites and pages are effectively invisible to the casual internet user.

The Deep Web includes any subscription services you may use, for example Netflix. Intranet systems for schools, colleges, and universities are stored here. Any service or website which requires some form of authentication to access it is most likely stored on the Deep Web.

3. The Dark Web

The Dark Web is a tiny part of the internet comprising just a few thousand sites. It is a subset of the Deep Web. You need special software to access these sites. All users and their locations are anonymous, and all data is encrypted.

Because it is hidden away the Dark Web is the ideal place for criminals to carry out their illegal activities, including drug and firearm transactions. It is also the place where stolen business information and personal details are traded. Cybercriminals store vast amounts of this stolen information on the Dark Web. It has become a busy marketplace where personal details and confidential business data are sold to the highest bidder.

Email addresses, usernames and passwords which have been taken through a Cyberattack are traded on the Dark Web. This means that the buyers can infiltrate your company network and cause you all sorts of problems. Last year saw a massive 62% increase in Ransomware attacks, as a result of the pandemic.

Understanding the implications of the Dark Web for your business is pretty scary!

But we are here to help. CNC offers a whole suite of industry standard security services designed to guard your IT systems against Hackers and Ransomware.

For example, we can help you:

  • Obtain Cyber Essentials certification. This is a government backed scheme designed to protect organisations of all sizes from the most common online threats. Find out more here
  • Implement Two Factor Authentication, so that a username and password alone is not sufficient to gain access to your business systems.

Video Conferencing is Here to Stay!

How can you make it as effective as possible?

We are all spending more time in video calls and video meetings. If you’re fed-up squinting at a small screen with poor sound quality, it’s time to invest in a state of the art Video Conferencing Monitor.

Our range of high-resolution Philips monitors feature pop-up webcams and built in speakers.

They also offer other benefits including a saving of up to 70% on your energy costs by automatically reducing the monitor brightness when people step away from their desk. They also have a light sensor which adjusts the picture brightness according to the lighting conditions in the room. And they are designed to reduce eye fatigue.

These are the products we recommend:

  • 23.8 inch screen - Philips B Line 242B1H - Resolution - Full HD (1080p) 1920 x 1080 at 75 Hz
  • 27 inch screen - Philips B Line 275B1H - Resolution 2560 x 1440 at 75 Hz
  • 31.5 inch screen - Philips P-line 326P1H - Resolution: 2560 x 1440 at 75 Hz
