In the 200 mph world of Formula 1, speed and precision are paramount. But, it wasn’t a race car that brought the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) to its knees—it was a cleverly crafted email. The governing body for some of the world’s most prestigious motorsports, the FIA, had fallen victim to a phishing attack.

In the 200 mph world of Formula 1, speed and precision are paramount”

Two employees at the FIA headquarters in Paris received what appeared to be routine emails. However, they weren’t, they were emails designed to look like legitimate emails, but they were in fact Phishing emails armed with malicious links that if clicked on would grant the cyber hackers access to their email accounts.

Within hours, the cybercriminals had siphoned off personal data and other confidential information. In a press release, the FIA admitted to the breach, revealing that the attackers had gained “unauthorized access to personal data contained in two mail accounts. Despite their rapid response, the FIA remained tight-lipped about the extent of the breach concerning the nature of the stolen data, the identities of the hackers, and whether a ransom had been demanded.

Beyond its role in motorsport, the FIA is a global advocate for road safety and sustainable mobility, with 242 member organisations in 147 countries. This breach not only threatened the FIA’s integrity but also its broader mission to improve safety and sustainability on roads worldwide.

What’s important about the FIA hack, is that it serves as a stark reminder of the ever-present cyber dangers lurking out there. In a sport where milliseconds can mean the difference between victory and defeat, the FIA learned that vigilance and cybersecurity are as critical as the fastest pit stop.
