An apprenticeship is a great way of training for a career in IT. Typically, it’s 18 months of intense training and lots of study.
Lots of exams, presentations, and hard work later, Anna came through with flying colours and, she is now a fully qualified IT technician. Well done Anna! So in between customer-solving problems and a cup of coffee, here’s what she had to say about the last 18 months.
An apprenticeship is a great way of training for a career in IT”
What is your earliest recollection of IT in your life?
I was about 7 years of age and I remember it was Christmas time I had to set up my own game consoles that my parents bought me. Since then, whenever I see my family, they save things up for me to fix, because they know I love the challenge.
When did you decide to become an IT Technician?
I was studying game design at university, but I dropped out I really had a passion for computers and technology, so, I got a job working in internal IT which was good and I enjoyed it a lot.
What was the hardest part during your apprenticeship?
The hardest thing that I did was building up my portfolio. Your portfolio is all about what you do on a daily basis. For example: how to deal with problems with Microsoft 365, or how to do a computer rebuild.
It’s nice seeing your portfolio of experience grow as you go through the months of your apprenticeship and both meet and exceed the targets within the portfolio criteria.
Would you recommend a CNC apprenticeship?
Absolutely. I really like the process of explaining how IT works to people who may not know it that well. I’ve learnt about the soft skills that you need to help people who are busy working in a business environment, who have little, or no time and their computer has let them down. They might be upset or under pressure, so I have to help them through it. That’s what I liked the most; resolving the problem and helping people to continue working.
What grade did you obtain on your graduation?
Merit
What would you be doing if you hadn’t chosen IT?
I used to do a lot of drawing as a child and I did pursue doing art when I was at school. I like colouring my hair in different and extreme colours. So, if I weren’t doing IT, I would have been a hairstylist.
What are your 3 top tips to pass your apprenticeship?
1: Patience is key when it comes to an IT job because you’re going to encounter problems. You have got to conduct that research, discuss it amongst colleagues and test it. You have got to expect failure, yet keep going forward and fix it.
2: Don’t be shy. Always communicate with your peers, if you need help.
3: IT is always changing every year and new things are coming out each year. IT will certainly keep you on your toes, so, it’s important to be adaptable to change.
